| Our
conductor Keith Stent has been Musical Director since 1963, when the society
was known as the Mayfield Orchestra and he was on the staff of the Royal
Ballet School. He has been a professor and conductor at Trinity College
of Music, and was an examiner for the college's worldwide examinations
department for thirty years until 1993, the last twelve as Chief Examiner.
More recently he spent some years as music adviser to Kevin Mayhew Publishers, and was music adviser for the extensive adult education music activities of the ILEA, head of department in teacher training and music adviser to the Benslow Music Trust. A busy adjudicator and tutor on holiday courses, he has had special commitments to the New London Music Society and the Yamaha organisation. Leader Margaret Whittall has played with the LPO, RPO and Bournemouth SO as well as in West End theatres and with chamber ensembles. She trained at Trinity College of Music where she was later to be a teacher in the junior department. With her husband, Brian Gaulton, she is a member of the Cotsford String Quartet and is also busy as a teacher, both privately and at Kings College School, Wimbledon. She continues the WSO tradition of attending every Wednesday rehearsal, both to lead, and act as string coach for sectional training rehearsals. Keith, and Margaret bring the experience and expertise that elevates rehearsal training and concert performances to an extremely high standard. |
